Chromium VI Occupational Exposure Plan - OSHA – Industrial: 29 CFR 1910.1026:

Provides the user with the needed written program for establishing the requirements for Chromium VI Occupational Exposure.

BASIS:

Chromium VI is an extremely toxic metal commonly found in industrial workplaces, particularly where any ore is being processed or smelted. Chromium VI exposure can occur in a variety of sources in certain industrial environments. The respiratory tract is the major target organ for acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) inhalation exposures. Shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing are some of the symptoms reported in cases of acute exposure to chromium VI, while perforations and ulcerations of the septum, bronchitis, decreased pulmonary function, pneumonia, and other respiratory effects have been connected with chronic exposure. Human studies have clearly established that inhaled chromium VI is a human carcinogen, possibly resulting in an increased risk of lung cancer. Chromium compounds are used for chrome plating, the manufacture of dyes and pigments, leather and wood preservation, and treatment of cooling tower water. Smaller amounts are used in drilling muds, textiles, and toner for copying machines. This poses a serious problem for exposed workers and their employer. This standard practice instruction establishes uniform requirements to ensure that procedures within this company to limit the spread of such hazards are implemented, evaluated, and that the proper hazard information is transmitted to all affected workers.
